Overview

Founded in 1887, Santa Barbara Humane is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and one of the first animal welfare agencies in the country. With campuses in Santa Barbara and Santa Maria, Santa Barbara Humane provides low-cost veterinary care, vaccines, and spay/neuter; affordable and humane dog training classes; pet adoption; and animal rehoming services

As one of the first animal welfare agencies in the West, Santa Barbara Humane has served our local communities since 1887. Founded on April 18, 1887, as the Santa Barbara Humane Society. The organization’s purpose was 'to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals in the County of Santa Barbara.' In 1940, purchased property at 801 E Montecito Street. In 1964, a gift from Kathleen Burke van Barkaloo Hale enabled purchase of the Beck property. In 1972, began spaying and neutering adoptable animals. In 1984, Santa Maria Valley Humane Society became a 501(c)(3). On February 1, 2020, the Santa Barbara Humane Society and Santa Maria Valley Humane Society merged to form Santa Barbara Humane. Today, both campuses serve the community with shelter, adoptions, veterinary clinics, and behavior training
