Horizon Veterinary Specialists was founded by five, local board-certified veterinarians and first opened it's doors on August 1, 2018. Horizon Veterinary Specialists is open to serve the small animals of Ventura and surrounding counties with their specialty and emergency needs. Horizon Founders, Dr. Melissa Herrera, Dr. Sarah Gray, Dr. Theresa Ortega, Dr. Amy Rhoades and Dr. Nancy Scott are all experts in their areas of practice. Well respected Criticalists, Dr. Sarah Gray and Dr. Nancy Scott, are both board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. In late 2016, recognizing the need for more emergency and critical care options for small animals in Ventura and the surrounding areas, Dr. Gray and Dr. Scott founded Emergency Veterinary Care (EVC), an after-hours emergency veterinary facility in Ventura. Dr. Amy Rhoades, Dr. Melissa Herrera and Dr. Theresa Ortega, all board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, joined EVC shortly thereafter. As the practice grew, EVC needed more space to be able to serve and support the community. As well as offering a place for veterinary professionals of all skill levels to grow and develop, continuing the mission of the incredible Horizon Partners

What reviewers say

60% Mixed sentiment
based on 224 reviews

Horizon Veterinary Specialists in Ventura functions as a 24-hour emergency and internal medicine hospital. The team includes specialists who handle critical trauma, rattlesnake bites, poisonings, and complex internal medicine cases, often providing dedicated overnight hospitalization, continuous monitoring, and structured end-of-life care marked by empathetic communication and sympathy cards. While many visitors report life-saving interventions, prompt triage for critical emergencies, and thorough explanations from knowledgeable doctors, others highlight severe operational challenges including extended wait times exceeding several hours, capacity constraints that occasionally lead to turning patients away, high costs, and occasional communication breakdowns during high-stress situations.
