Megan looked like a full-blooded Black Lab, but then she was a bit of a scamp. Her mom was a top-dollar field trail, registered Lab; her dad was a good-looking but sneaky Gold Retriever. The embarrassing litter was quietly given away. Megan was born in May of 1989, so she came to live with me the summer before I started vet school at Auburn. Megan was an important part of my life, sharing vet school, the death of my father, my marriage to Angus, and the birth of our two children, Yuri and Kylie. Megan was great with children and very protective of me. She liked the water but loved to walk - miles, and miles, and miles. And she was always ready to go in the car, anywhere. Fifteen-and-a-half years after Megan first graced my life, she began to show and feel her age. With pain in her back and rear legs, it was hard for her to get up to greet me. She began to fall. I couldn't keep her comfortable, and I didn't want her to suffer. One day, Megan told me it was time, and I knew I needed to take care of this - personally and with respect. I gently euthanized my friend - it was the kindest gift I could give her, after all she had shared with me.
