In the 1930s, our story began as a traveling farm animal service run by a self-proclaimed expert who roamed the area dispensing remedies and tonics from a base on south Main Street (where McDonald’s stands today). Back then, veterinarians were not even required to be licensed in the U.S., though the first veterinary colleges had emerged in the late 1800s. The 1940s marked a turning point when the practice was acquired by its first licensed veterinary graduate, Billy Stropp. He later sold it, along with the building, to Dr. Julius Fishler in the 1950s. Dr. Fishler transformed the ambulatory farm service into a pioneer in small animal care, treating dogs and the rare house cat. A visionary in feline medicine and radiology, he became nationally renowned for his innovations and even helped spark several veterinary medical societies in Elkhart County, many with international reach. In 1976, Dr. Rick Nelson, fresh from Michigan State University, joined Dr. Fishler. On January 1, 1980, Dr. Nelson purchased the practice and relocated it to our current home at 2330 E. Mishawaka Road, expanding it over three decades into a thriving four-veterinarian clinic with more than 20 dedicated team members. Board-certified in veterinary practice (ABVP) since 1986, Dr. Nelson championed orthopedic surgery and a philosophy of continuous learning, fostering an atmosphere where high-quality care meets genuine kindness for pets and their owners alike. In fall 2025, after over 45 years of visionary leadership, Dr. Nelson retired and passed the torch to our accomplished associate veterinarians. His legacy of excellence endures and continues to guide us as we grow and innovate for Elkhart’s pets
