Dr. Richard Barta opened Barta Animal Hospital in January 1973 in a former automotive repair shop that he had remodeled. He built a new clinic in 1997. Dr. Barta grew his clinic from one doctor and two staff into today's practice, which is now three doctors and eight staff. The Pet Shop, next door to the clinic, was opened in the late 1980s. An attraction at Dr. Barta's clinic was his beloved pet monkey, Gizmo, who accompanied him to work every day for 26 years. Dr. Barta was a life member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Kansas Veterinary Medical Association, served on various boards, and received the K.V.M.A. President's Award in 2006 and Distinguished Service Award in 2012. He passed away on January 12, 2021
