They began offering ambulatory services in July 2013 and then opened the hospital facility in July 2014 to fill a need for a referral hospital in the area. At the time, Heartland Equine was a full service equine hospital, providing 24 hour emergency care 365 days per year. In 2018, after the birth of their second child, Eric and Kelly made the difficult decision to stop providing after-hour emergency care and focus on sport horse medicine, enabling them to spend more time with their two young sons, Derek and Dylan
