Overview
We’ve been caring for the animals of Springfield and Hampden County for over 40 years, and in that time we’ve become a trusted resource for pet parents in this area. Our doctors and staff are committed to the health and well-being of our patients and to providing the best possible service to the families who bring their pets to us. Our approach originates with practical, preventative care, and we want to be a partner with you in making sure your pet has as many healthy years with you as possible
Spruce Hill Veterinary Clinic is named for Spruce Hill in Philadelphia, where the original clinic was located two blocks from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Ken Bernstein, a 1973 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, purchased the clinic and was joined by his wife, Dr. Sherry Himmelstein, when she graduated in 1976. In 1978, they relocated to western Massachusetts and kept the same name for their new veterinary clinic in Springfield. Over the years the clinic became well known for compassionate, expert care and for seeing a wide variety of animals. In addition to dogs and cats, the vets at Spruce Hill also treat pocket pets, birds, exotics, and are licensed wildlife rehabilitators. Their dedication to the animals of this community is the reason why nearly every year for over a decade, Spruce Hill has won the MassLive “Reader Raves” poll for Best Veterinary Practice! In 2022, Dr. Bernstein and Dr. Himmelstein stepped down from ownership and full-time practice and Spruce Hill Veterinary Clinic became part of the Veterinary Innovative Partners (VIP) family of veterinary hospitals. Just as Spruce Hill always was, VIP is committed to providing the best in pet care and client service. Dr Bernstein and Dr. Himmelstein now practice in the clinic on a part-time basis, continuing the commitment to personalized care for your pets that’s tailored to their needs, age, lifestyle, and your budget. In complex cases, we consult with and offer referrals to board-certified specialists to provide the best options available for every pet
