Overview

At Gates & Gates Veterinary Clinic, we have been consistently serving the Mississippi Delta and surrounding area with excellent veterinary care for all types of animals since 1909

Gates & Gates Veterinary Clinic has a rich history beginning in 1909 when Dr. William L. Gates moved his Veterinary Practice from a livery stable where the Peabody Hotel now stands in Memphis, Tennessee to Clarksdale, Mississippi. The elder Dr. Gates graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in Ontario, Canada as there were few Veterinary Colleges in the United States at that time. Dr. Gates was active in the Mississippi Veterinary Medical Association serving as President and as a member of the Veterinary Board of Examiners. He practiced until his death in 1962. In 1941, his son, Dr. Glenn D. Gates, joined the practice. The younger Dr. Gates graduated with a VMD degree from the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical School, the only Veterinary College to grant this degree. All other Veterinary Colleges, including Mississippi State, award DVM degrees. Dr. Glenn D. Gates was very active in Veterinary life serving as President of the MVMA, receiving the award of Mississippi Veterinarian of the Year, and receiving the greatest honor of being elected to the Mississippi Veterinary Medical Association Hall of Fame. He practiced until his death in 2015 at the age of 101! In 1965, Dr. Elmer W. Landess joined the practice after graduating from the Veterinary College at Auburn University and serving our country in the U.S. Army. Dr. Landess continues practicing today and is an excellent diagnostician and a skilled surgeon. His expertise is sought by the College of Veterinary Medicine at Mississippi State when modern techniques fail to diagnose rarely seen, older diseases!
