Dr. Wagener opened Blue Ridge Animal Hospital in March 1974. Since then he has established Blue Ridge Animal Hospital as the first American Animal Hospital Association certified member hospital in Buncombe County. He was also the first veterinarian in North Carolina to take and pass the American Board of Veterinary Practitioner's certification test for diplomat status in companion animal medicine and surgery
