Dr. Guzman attended Douglas Byrd High School in Fayetteville, NC and graduated Salutatorian of her senior class. She received a 4 year scholarship to Methodist College in Fayetteville, but transferred to NC State University in order to pursue a doctorate in veterinary medicine at the brand new NC State College of Veterinary Medicine in Raleigh, NC where she graduated second in her class in 1982. She completed her doctorate in 1986 and went to work at the Animal Hospital of Fayetteville with Dr. J.K. Garrett, running 2 of his clinics for 5 years. She would later be approached by Fran Asher of Laurinburg on behalf of the local Human Society. Ms. Asher was transporting animals from Scotland County NC to Cumberland County NC for low-cost spay and neuter. At the time, no local veterinarians would work with the shelter due to no profit. Ms. Asher then offered to find a suitable office and build up a local clientele for the Scotland County and surrounding areas and X-Way Road Animal Hospital opened in April of 1991. She has continued to serve to community since, donating time, services and helping local shelters, rescues, and non-profits with their mission to keep the animal population down while also keeping prices low and affordable for the surrounding communities
