Highland Animal Hospital was established on July 6, 1987, by Dr. Donald Lowe in a one-story, converted former ceramic pottery shop on PA Route 873 in rural Slatington, Pennsylvania. In January 2001, Dr. Carl H. Fortna joined the veterinary team after practicing small animal medicine and surgery in Berks County, PA, for 6 years. In 2009, with the practice expanding, the present-day existing 8,500-square-foot facility was built next door on an adjacent piece of farmland. In 2012, Dr. Brandon K. Mattson joined the team after working in a veterinary emergency/referral hospital in Northeast PA. On February 19, 2016, Drs. Fortna and Mattson became the new owners. What began as a one-veterinarian practice with two examination rooms and one employee has grown into a multiple-veterinarian practice providing small animal healthcare in the greater Lehigh Valley
