Slippery Rock Veterinary Hospital has deep roots in our community, founded by Dr. Paul J. Suorsa in 1966. What began as one veterinarian's vision has grown into a trusted family legacy now spanning two generations. Today, the practice proudly continues under the leadership of his son, Dr. Daniel Suorsa, upholding our commitment to 'Patient Care Through Exceptional Client Service' while carrying forward a tradition of veterinary excellence. Dr. Paul Suorsa, a first-generation Finnish American and graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, established his practice in Slippery Rock in 1966 after previously practicing in Mercer. His passion for veterinary medicine was sparked early in life when he witnessed a veterinarian revive what appeared to be a dying cow. After serving in the U.S. Navy and using the GI Bill to attend Westminster College and the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Paul graduated with his veterinary degree in 1956. He purchased his farm on Branchton Road in 1966, which became both his home and the foundation for his veterinary practice. A dedicated professional and community member, Dr. Paul served on the Pennsylvania State Board of Veterinary Medicine, was a longtime member of the Slippery Rock Rotary Club (joining in 1971), and applied the Rotary Four-Way Test as an ethical guide throughout his life and practice. In addition to his veterinary work, Dr. Paul and his wife Gertrude established Arcadian Arabians, a breeding farm for Arabian horses, in 1959. Later in life, Dr. Paul founded Arcadian Exotics, where he bred miniature donkeys and goats, applying his veterinary expertise and knowledge of genetics to his breeding program. In 1993, Dr. Daniel built the current hospital building, establishing a permanent home for the growing practice. For over a decade, Dr. Paul and his son Dr. Daniel Suorsa worked side by side, with the younger Dr. Suorsa eventually taking the reins of the family practice. Today, Slippery Rock Veterinary Hospital truly remains a family operation. Dr. Daniel serves as the practice's veterinarian, while his wife Tiffany works as the hospital administrator. Together, they manage the daily operations, and even some of their children have joined the healthcare team, representing a third generation of the Suorsa family's commitment to animal care in our community
