Originally founded by Dr. Edward "Tommy" Thompson in January of 1945, Salem Animal Hospital focused on providing both small and large animal medicine. In 1973, after working as an Associate for several years, Dr. Allen R. Bryant purchased the practice and continued the same level of personal, compassionate care. Due to continued growth, Dr. Allen Bryant built a new facility in 1982 and began to shift the focus of the practice to strictly small animal. Dr. Rich Bryant and his wife, Danielle, purchased the practice from his father in January 2008. Under their leadership and taking what they learned from Dr. Allen Bryant, Salem Animal Hospital has grown into the practice that it is today which includes 7 full-time doctors and 27 support staff members. In August 2003, after many successful years in management with Verizon, Dr. Rich Bryant, affectionately known as "Dr. Rich", began the journey to a new career when he entered the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. With the support of his wife, his sons, and his extended family, Dr. Rich graduated with his medical degree in May 2007 and joined his father at Salem Animal Hospital as an associate veterinarian. In 2008, he became a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner after completing a program at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. Being able to collaborate with clients in order to provide the best care possible for their pets throughout their lives is challenging, but Dr. Rich enjoys establishing close relationships with both his patients and clients. Salem Animal Hospital welcomed Dr. Jordan Weintraub, as an associate veterinarian in May 2018 after he completed his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Weintraub, affectionately known as Dr. J, has loved working with animals since he was a kid and decided to pursue the career. Dr. J and his wife, Taylor, welcomed a son to their family in July 2022 and a daughter in February 2025. He enjoys surgery as well as working up an array of complicated cases. He loves spending time with his family, working out, playing golf, and snowboarding during his free time. In December of 2019, Salem Animal Hospital welcomed Dr. Christine Ferris as an associate veterinarian. Dr. Ferris graduated from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1995. After practicing in the Roanoke area for several years, she opened and operated Companion Pet Care Clinic in Salem from 2001 to 2017. When the opportunity to return to Salem and work with Dr. Rich Bryant arose, she jumped at the chance. Watching her patients grow from an adorable puppy or kitten to a precious, graying senior is her favorite part of the job. She feels she becomes a part of the family and treasures the relationship formed with both the four and two legged members. Dr. Hannah Perez joined our team of doctors in June of 2021. Dr. Perez earned her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in 2021. Before attending veterinary school, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Mathematics from St. Mary's College of Maryland. She is originally from Frederick, MD but fell in love with Southwest Virginia after moving here for veterinary school. After graduation, she moved to Salem, where she lives with her husband, Nathan, her dog, and cats. In her free time, she likes to spend time outdoors with her dog, travel, try new recipes, read and foster kittens. In 2023, Salem Animal Hospital moved into a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility designed to better serve our patients and community. Our modern building features seven exam rooms, a dedicated comfort room, an in-house laboratory, two fully equipped surgical suites, a specialized dental suite, an isolation ward, a radiology room, and a spacious treatment area. These expanded and upgraded facilities allow us to continue delivering the highest quality veterinary care in a comfortable, efficient, and compassionate environment. Dr. Hughes began his journey with SAH as a volunteer while in high school before transitioning into a veterinary assistant role. He worked as a vet assistant throughout his undergraduate years at Virginia Tech and during his time at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM) for four years. Dr. Hughes joined the team as a doctor in June of 2024. Dr. Rich, Danielle, and their team strive to maintain a "hometown" culture within the practice while simultaneously providing the highest levels of modern veterinary medicine possible. They have built an exceptional team that focuses on providing excellent patient care as well as growing the Salem Animal Hospital family, from client to staff to the pets whose care is the very core of their practice. In June 2025, Salem Animal Hospital welcomed Dr. Alexxis Nall as an associate veterinarian at Salem Animal Hospital. Dr. Nall earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Florida, graduating in the top 10 of her class—a testament to her dedication and academic excellence. Prior to veterinary school, she completed her undergraduate studies at the University of North Florida. Dr. Nall relocated to Virginia when her fiancé began medical school at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. Since then, they've been enjoying the beautiful mountain scenery and the cooler climate that Southwest Virginia has to offer. Outside the clinic, Dr. Nall loves spending time outdoors with her fiancé and their pets: Boomer, a playful Labrador Retriever/Great Dane mix; a sweet chocolate English Labrador Retriever; Scoobert, a playful English Labrador; and their two cats, Hokie and Sunday
