After living in the United States for 20 years after relocating from the Republic of South Sudan, Dr. Dut Malek, DVM, decided to pursue his dream of opening a veterinary clinic. Paying homage to both his native Lake state and American home in the Guilford Lakes area, Lakes Veterinary Services in Branford, CT, symbolizes the fruits of his labor. After graduating from vet school in Egypt, he decided to stay for five years following his graduation, choosing not to return to Sudan due to the government hostility. He faced bleak employment prospects in Egypt, and he began to search for a sponsor who could help him immigrate to the United States. He arrived in New Haven, CT, in 1998 with Guilford’s First Congregational Church acting as a sponsor for his resettlement through Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Service. With the support of local church volunteers who helped him to the path of self-reliance, Dr. Malek began to settle into the American way of life. Eight months later, he was reunited with his wife, Anyikor Acuil-Malek, and they settled in Guilford, CT. Difficulties in completing the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination did not deter him from his goal; rather, it inspired him to go back to school, and he enrolled in Oklahoma State University. After completing the year-long refresher program, he took the examination once more and passed. He then took a clinical year, during which he spent 13 rigorous months training as a doctor under the supervision of the college. He then returned to Connecticut and started working in 2007. He worked for various veterinary hospitals in the area before deciding to open his own facility in July 2018. Working in collaboration with his wife, he has achieved his goal of opening his own practice. He looks forward to caring for your pets
