Hill Street Veterinary Hospital (HSVH) has its roots firmly planted in an old York County family that settled in this area in the 1850s. The first veterinarian, Dr. Frederick Helb Hartenstein, practiced out of a stable in New Freedom. He traveled from farm-to-farm in a horse drawn carriage. In 1941, his son, Dr. George Lewis Hartenstein III, or "Doc" purchased an established veterinary practice at 555 Hill Street. They named their new practice Hartenstein Hospital. Here they laid the foundation for the amazing years to come. To ensure the good people of York always had the veterinary care they deserve, Doc passed the torch along to his son, Dr. George Lewis Hartenstein IV in 1968. Together, they continued to provide both companion animal and farm animal medicine. In December 1986, Dr. Albert L. Haun signed on as Partner, and the hospital formally changed names from Hartenstein Hospital to Hill Street Veterinary Hospital. Over the next several years, Hill Street enjoyed steady growth and change as York County landscape changed from a farming town into a more modern suburban community. Today, Hill Street Veterinary Hospital continues to provide care for companion and farm animals. Dr. Haun has retired, but our team has flourished with bright new additions. Dr. Sara Alfano and Dr. Lauren Feroli signed on as partners, joining Dr. George Hartenstein and managing partner, Louisa Hartenstein. Most recently, Dr. Faith Roser set down some new roots as an associate. We have added avian and exotic mammals to our list of patients.
