General Practice

A primary-care veterinary clinic providing routine and preventive care.

Definition

A general practice is a primary-care veterinary clinic offering routine wellness exams, vaccinations, dental care, and common medical and surgical procedures, referring more complex cases out to specialty or referral hospitals. General practice is the entry point for most pet owners and the largest segment of the veterinary market by practice count.

Why it matters in veterinary consolidation

General practices are the frontline of the profession and the most numerous acquisition target for consolidators, since a single roll-up can acquire dozens of small general practices to build density in a region far more easily than it can acquire specialty capacity. The mix of independent versus corporately owned general practices in a given market is the most direct read on how far consolidation has progressed there.
