Definition
A specialty or referral hospital treats cases referred by general practices — oncology, cardiology, neurology, surgery, internal medicine, and similar advanced disciplines — and is staffed by veterinarians who are board-certified specialists in those fields. These hospitals typically carry more advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment (CT, MRI, linear accelerators) than a general practice and often operate around the clock, including emergency and critical care.
Why it matters in veterinary consolidation
Specialty and referral medicine has become one of the most active acquisition targets for consolidators and PE-backed groups because of its higher case values, and several of the largest national platforms — BluePearl, VCA, Ethos — built their footprint substantially around specialty and emergency hospitals. Where specialty capacity concentrates (and who owns it) shapes referral patterns and access to advanced care for pet owners nationwide.
